Welcoming New Graduate Students of TPHP: Embarking on Their Academic Journey with Enthusiasm

Yogyakarta, August 14, 2025 – The Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology (TPHP), Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada, officially welcomed its new graduate students for the 2025/2026 Academic Year through an orientation program held on Thursday (14/8). The event was attended by incoming students of the Master in Food Science and Technology (S2 ITP), Master in Estate Crop Product Technology (S2 THP), and Doctoral Program in Food Science (S3 IP). Out of 33 new graduate students, 21 joined the Master in Food Science and Technology (S2 ITP), including one international student from Timor Leste.

Opening Remarks and Program Introduction

The program was hosted by Dr. Widiastuti Setyaningsih, S.T.P., M.Sc., as Secretary of the Graduate Program. The orientation officially began with a welcoming address from Prof. Dr. Ir. Tyas Utami, M.Sc., Head of the Department of TPHP. In her remarks, she extended her warm welcome to the new students and introduced the department’s leadership team and graduate program coordinators. Prof. Tyas also emphasized the importance of becoming familiar with the academic system, faculty members, and available student services to ensure a smooth learning experience.

Academic Structure and International Opportunities

The orientation continued with a presentation on the academic structure, accreditation status, and research facilities at TPHP. Each research laboratory was introduced in detail, including lecturers and their research focus areas.

Students also received information about various student mobility programs designed to broaden their academic and international exposure. Partner universities include Yamagata University, Ehime University, Tohoku University, Osaka University, and Kyoto University (Japan); Prince of Songkla University (Thailand); the University of Cadiz and the University of Malaga (Spain); as well as opportunities through Summer School Scholarships. In addition, students were encouraged to participate in academic enrichment activities such as field trips and community service programs.

Curriculum Overview

Highlighting the academic session, Dr. Ir. Muhammad Nur Cahyanto, M.Sc., Head of the Master Program in Food Science and Technology (S2 ITP), presented an overview of the curriculum. He explained the key differences between undergraduate and graduate studies, noting that master’s level education focuses on knowledge advancement and research development. He also introduced the two available tracks, the regular track and the by research track, along with the structure of compulsory and elective courses offered each semester.

 

Interactive Discussion with New Students

The orientation concluded with a lively discussion and Q&A session between the new students and program coordinators. Students actively raised questions about the academic system, research opportunities, and international collaboration programs, reflecting their enthusiasm for starting this new academic journey.

With this orientation, the new cohort of S2 ITP students is expected to embark on their studies with strong motivation, achieve academic excellence, and contribute to the advancement of food science and technology at both national and global levels.
