Welcoming New Master’s Students in Food Science and Technology (S2 ITP) for the Even Semester 2024/2025: An Inspiring Academic Journey Begins

Yogyakarta, February 7, 2025 – The Master’s Program in Food Science and Technology (S2 ITP), Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada, officially welcomed new students for the Even Semester of the 2024/2025 Academic Year in an orientation event held on Friday (7/2). The event was attended by the department leadership, program administrators, and new S2 ITP students. This year, two international students from Uganda and Ethiopia joined the S2 ITP academic community, adding diversity to the learning environment.

Opening Remarks by the Head of the Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology (TPHP)

The event commenced with a welcome speech by Prof. Tyas Utami, M.Sc., Head of the Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology (TPHP) UGM. She expressed appreciation and extended warm greetings to the new students. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of reading, gathering information, and analyzing scientific journals to help students excel in their studies. Additionally, Prof. Tyas highlighted that S2 ITP graduates are expected not only to be academically competent but also to demonstrate leadership and make meaningful contributions to society.

Introduction to the Program and International Collaboration Opportunities

The next session was led by Dr. Widiastuti Setyaningsih, S.T.P., M.Sc., Secretary of the S2 ITP Program. She provided an overview of the program structure, research laboratories, and the academic and administrative team. Additionally, she outlined various international collaboration opportunities available to students, such as student exchange, dual degree, and research scholarships. Partner universities collaborating with S2 ITP include Yamagata University (Japan), Ehime University (Japan), Prince of Songkla University (Thailand), Erasmus+ TransfrontEU (Spain), and Summer School Scholarships.

Besides international collaborations, students are also encouraged to participate in Field Trips and Community Service Programs, which are designed to provide hands-on experience in the industry and community.

Curriculum Overview and Research Focus

Dr. Ir. Muhammad Nur Cahyanto, M.Sc., Head of the Master’s Program in Food Science and Technology, delivered a presentation on the learning structure at S2 ITP. He explained that the program is designed not only to strengthen students’ expertise in food technology but also to equip them with analytical and research skills. Some of the core courses offered include Research Methodology, Scientific Communication, Advanced Food Analysis, Independent Study, and various elective courses tailored to students’ interests.

Engaging Interaction and Discussion

Following the curriculum presentation, the event continued with an interactive question-and-answer session. New students had the opportunity to engage directly with faculty members and program administrators, gaining deeper insights into the academic system, research opportunities, and potential challenges they might face throughout their studies. The session was dynamic and interactive, reflecting the enthusiasm of students embarking on their academic journey.

The orientation concluded in an atmosphere filled with enthusiasm in Room 5.14 of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology UGM. With numerous opportunities and facilities available, the new S2 ITP students are now ready to embark on their academic journey with dedication and passion toward a bright future.
