Participating in the Erasmus+ KA171 Student Mobility Program has been an extraordinary and meaningful experience for me, M. Umar Harun, a master’s student in Food Science and Technology (MFST) for the 2022/2023 academic year. The Erasmus+ KA171 program is one of the scholarship opportunities available to MFST’s students at Universitas Gadjah Mada, offering selected participants the chance to study in the land of matadors—Spain—specifically at the University of Cádiz.
During the program, I had the golden opportunity to conduct research at IVAGRO (Instituto de Investigación Vitivinícola y Agroalimentaria), a research institute under the University of Cádiz specializing in wine and various agro-food products. The research facilities at IVAGRO, including advanced chemical testing instruments, reagents, and other materials, were exceptionally well-equipped and sophisticated. The completeness and modernity of these facilities left me in awe and further motivated me to master them, supporting my research journey. This experience not only broadened my knowledge in research but also enhanced my technical and analytical skills, which are invaluable for my academic and professional development.
Living abroad required me to adapt to a new environment. I had the opportunity to interact not only with fellow Indonesian students but also with local Spanish students and peers from around the world. These interactions offered fresh perspectives on values, cultures, viewpoints, and lifestyles. Although my stay was brief, being part of Spanish society was both a challenge and a uniquely valuable experience. One of the most important lessons I learned was the significance of flexibility and openness when navigating a new environment—especially in a society with cultural differences that are significantly distinct from Indonesia. Without these qualities, adapting to a new environment would be much more difficult.
Beyond exploring the various reagents and testing instruments at IVAGRO, traveling across the Schengen Area was an opportunity I couldn’t miss. During holidays, I took the chance to visit open-border countries, including Portugal. Exploring the Schengen region not only enriched my knowledge in food and agriculture but also deepened my appreciation for the diversity of cultures and histories across Europe.
I am truly grateful and delighted that this incredible program is available to students. It has not only expanded my academic and professional insights but also shaped my character and broadened my international network. Through this story, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Dr. Widiastuti, Prof. Miguel, and the academic community at Universitas Gadjah Mada for granting me this invaluable opportunity. The support, guidance, and resources provided have enabled me to gain such a priceless experience in my academic journey. I hope this experience inspires other students to courageously pursue international opportunities and expand their horizons.
