Irakiza Gideon, a Master’s student in Food Science and Technology (MFST) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), achieved an outstanding accomplishment by winning a silver medal at the Walisongo International Pencak Silat Championships 2025, held in Semarang from September 4–7, 2025. Representing the PSHT Club of Universitas Gadjah Mada, he competed in the Laga Category Class E Male Adult.
The prestigious tournament brought together skilled, experienced silat athletes from around the world, offering matches that demanded precision, endurance, and courage. For Gideon, who is relatively new to competitive pencak silat, each bout was not only a contest but also a valuable learning experience, sharpening both physical strength and mental resilience.
He expressed deep gratitude to his coaches: Andri Setyawan, Bariana, and Izzuh for their unwavering guidance and support. “They didn’t just train me in techniques. They shaped my mindset, built my confidence, and guided me with incredible patience,” he said.
Throughout the competition, Gideon discovered that pencak silat is more than a martial art. It is a philosophy of perseverance and precision. “Silat teaches you to stay calm under pressure, to act with intention rather than impulse. In many ways, I see a parallel with academic life, where patience, creativity, and resilience are just as essential in facing uncertainty,” he explained.
For Gideon, earning a silver medal in such a highly competitive category was more than a personal milestone; it reflects his journey of growth and self-discovery. “Pencak Silat taught me that true mastery, whether on the mat or in life, is not about never falling, but about rising each time with greater wisdom and purpose. Silver may rest on my neck, but the golden lesson rests in my heart: growth begins the moment you choose to step into the arena,” he concluded.
This achievement highlights the spirit and determination of MFST students and is expected to inspire others to keep growing, not just in academics, but also through activities that build character, resilience, and a strong fighting spirit.
