The Master’s Program in Food Science and Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (MFST UGM), celebrated the graduation of 17 students during the first postgraduate graduation period of the 2026/2027 academic year. The graduation gathering was held on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at the Kamarijani Soenjoto Auditorium, Faculty of Agricultural Technology (FTP) UGM, together with graduates from other postgraduate programs across the faculty.
In his remarks, Dean of FTP UGM Prof. Dr. Mirwan Ushada, S.T.P., M.App.Life.Sc., reminded the graduates that graduation is not the end of their journey, but the beginning of the next chapter. He encouraged them to continue pursuing their goals, appreciate every experience they gained during their studies, value the support and prayers of their families, and use their knowledge to make a positive impact.
Prof. Mirwan also highlighted UGM’s role in both creating knowledge and bringing benefits to society. Wherever their careers may take them, graduates are expected to continue contributing as academics, professionals, leaders, or entrepreneurs who create opportunities for others.
Several MFST UGM graduates also achieved notable academic accomplishments during this graduation period. Irakiza Gideon, M.Sc., an international student from Uganda, was recognized as one of the graduates with the shortest study period, completing his master’s degree in 1 year, 7 months, and 21 days. His achievement was especially meaningful as he completed his studies far from home while adapting to a different academic environment, culture, and language.
Another strong academic achievement came from 13 of the 17 MFST UGM graduates who earned Cum Laude honors. The certificates of achievement were presented by Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Yudi Pranoto, S.T.P., M.P. The event then continued with the presentation of commemorative gifts to MFST UGM graduates by Dr. Widiastuti Setyaningsih, S.T.P., M.Sc., Head of MFST UGM, together with Prof. Dr. Ir. Tyas Utami, M.Sc.
During the sharing session, graduates and their families reflected on their experiences throughout the study journey. Gideon expressed his appreciation to FTP UGM, the lecturers, academic staff, and friends who supported him during his time in Indonesia. He shared that language was one of the biggest challenges he faced, but the support he received helped him overcome difficult moments and successfully complete his degree.
Ragil Tirta Mandiri, M.Sc., also shared his gratitude and pride after completing his studies despite the different challenges he faced along the way. He expressed his appreciation for the research facilities at FTP UGM, which he felt had supported students well throughout their research. He also hoped that the available facilities would continue to be maintained and further developed to support future academic and research activities.
Family support was another important part of the graduates’ journey. A parent of Nadia Muna Salmsa, M.Sc., shared her gratitude and pride in seeing her daughter complete her studies at UGM. As a teacher, she emphasized the importance of education and expressed her hope that the knowledge gained during Nadia’s studies would be useful and bring positive impact in the future.
This graduation marks the end of an academic journey for 17 MFST UGM graduates, while also opening a new chapter for them to apply the knowledge, experience, and skills they gained during their studies. The graduates are encouraged to stay connected with their alma mater and continue contributing to the development of food science and technology in their future careers and communities.
This activity also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on Quality Education, by preparing graduates with strong academic skills, integrity, and the ability to contribute positively to society.
