Master’s students from the Food Science and Technology program at the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FTP UGM), took part in an industrial visit to PT Charoen Pokphand Indonesia in Salatiga on Saturday, April 26. The visit was designed to enhance their understanding of large-scale food production and the practical application of food science and technology in an industrial setting.
The participants, consisting of 23 students and accompanied by 7 lecturers, was warmly welcomed by Mr. Tridadi, the Purchasing & General Affairs (P&GA) Manager. A comprehensive presentation on the production and food processing systems was delivered by Mr. Yosi Pratama, the Quality Control Manager.
The presentation began with an introduction to PT Charoen Pokphand Indonesia’s main production units, which include chicken slaughtering and the production of processed meats such as nuggets, meatballs, and sausages—achieved through a synergy of human labor and advanced technology. The facility also produces bread crumbs as a supporting component for processed food products. The session continued with an explanation of the production workflow and product handling, followed by a live observation of the production process.
After the presentation, all participants were invited to tour the facilities to observe the chicken slaughtering line and the sausage and nugget production areas. Through this direct observation, PT Charoen Pokphand Indonesia demonstrated its commitment to ensuring that all processes—from upstream to downstream—adhere to halal principles and food safety standards. This commitment is further evidenced by the food safety certifications obtained across all food production lines. This activity served as a bridge connecting theoretical knowledge with practical application in the industrial world.
After the visit to PT Charoen Pokphand Indonesia, the group continued their journey to Cimory Dairy Land in Ungaran, Semarang. More than just a recreational trip, the visit also offered students insights into the potential of agro-tourism, which combines elements of the economy, tourism, and livestock farming. The experience gained by these graduate students is expected to help shape competent graduates with a strong competitive edge in food technology, quality management, and food safety. As a result, graduates of MFST will be better prepared to face challenges in the professional world.
