The Master’s Programme in Food Science and Technology (MFST), Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), visited Kasetsart University’s Bangkhen Campus in Bangkok, Thailand, on 3 September 2026. The visit explored a potential double degree programme, joint supervision, and research and internship opportunities for students.
UGM MFST was represented by Programme Head Dr. Widiastuti Setyaningsih, S.T.P., M.Sc. and Programme Secretary Dr. Qurrotul A’yun, S.T.P., M.Sc. At the Department of Food Science and Technology, Faculty of Agro-Industry, discussions involved Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kanithaporn Vangnai, Asst. Prof. Dr. Pathima Udonpaijitkul, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kriskamol Na Jom. The meeting addressed programme compatibility and potential areas for collaborative research.
A key topic was the possibility of developing a double degree programme. UGM MFST proposed a 1+1 model involving a single thesis, joint publication, and course equivalency, with the aim of enabling students to complete their studies within two years. Kasetsart University welcomed the proposal. Further technical discussions are required, particularly on curriculum alignment and recognition of academic activities at both universities.
Kasetsart University also expressed its openness to hosting UGM students for part of their thesis research and to developing joint supervision. These opportunities could broaden students’ access to relevant faculty expertise and research facilities. Funding options for student exchanges require further investigation.
The visit also included the Institute of Food Research and Product Development (IFRPD). Meetings with its executives and researchers highlighted opportunities for collaboration in food processing, extrusion, microbial and microalgal technology, rheology, pilot plant operations, and food quality assurance services.
IFRPD is open to hosting student research internships lasting from three months to one year. Its work in applied research and industry consultancy could help students explore the connections between research, process development, and the needs of the food industry. Participation will require suitable research topics and advance planning for costs and accommodation.
The delegation also visited the Faculty of Veterinary Technology to explore research interests and potential interdisciplinary collaboration. Tours of laboratories and food processing facilities helped identify resources that could complement research activities at UGM.
As a follow-up, technical discussions with the Department of Food Science and Technology can continue through online meetings facilitated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kanithaporn Vangnai. Mapping faculty expertise, student research topics, and curriculum compatibility will provide a basis for developing joint activities that support learning and strengthen thesis research within UGM MFST.
