UGM Strengthens International Research Collaboration through Erasmus+ and Joint Supervision of Master’s Student in Spain

The Master’s Program in Food Science and Technology (S2 ITP), Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), continues to demonstrate its commitment to expanding global academic networks and improving the quality of education through international collaboration. One concrete initiative is the participation of Dr. Widiastuti Setyaningsih, Secretary of the Master’s Program in Food Science and Technology, in the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility for Training program held at the University of Cádiz (UCA), Spain, from April 28 to May 2, 2025.

This mobility aimed to provide direct academic supervision to a current S2 ITP student conducting a five-month thesis research stay at UCA under a joint supervision scheme. Through this arrangement, the student is guided by supervisors from both UGM and UCA, facilitating a truly collaborative research experience across institutions and countries. Dr. Widiastuti’s presence at UCA represents UGM’s strong institutional support for high-quality academic supervision in an international setting.

Beyond student supervision, this visit also served to strengthen the long-standing research collaboration between UGM and UCA in the field of food analysis, with a specific focus on chemometric method development and the validation of bioactive compounds in functional foods. The training program covered key topics such as advanced food analysis, data pre-processing, modeling techniques, and best practices for research dissemination—laying the foundation for a more sustainable Erasmus+ research network between the two institutions.

This activity also contributes directly to the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), notably SDG 4 (Quality Education) through faculty capacity building and internationally enriched curricula, SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) through advanced analytical techniques for food systems, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by fostering long-term academic collaboration across borders.

Through this initiative, UGM reaffirms its strategic vision to be a globally engaged institution, supporting future opportunities in student and staff mobility, joint research grants, and collaborative publications. The S2 ITP Program remains committed to cultivating an academic environment that is innovative, globally connected, and responsive to the future of food science and technology.
