Yogyakarta – Students of the Master’s Program in Food Science and Technology (MFST), Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada, have once again achieved a proud accomplishment at the national level. Evelyn Gabriella Suliantoro and Husnul Wati won first place in the Sustainable Livestock Transformation Research and Innovation Competition for Young Scientists, held by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) on March 25–31, 2026.
In the competition, Evelyn and Husnul were also selected among the top 10 finalists and had the opportunity to present their idea in a pitching session held in Jakarta on March 26–27, 2026. This achievement was made under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ir. Supriyadi, M.Sc., who guided them throughout the process of developing the idea and preparing the innovation for the competition.
The competition served as a platform for young scientists to present innovative ideas that support a more sustainable transformation of the livestock sector. In this event, Evelyn and Husnul introduced an innovation focused on real-time monitoring of beef freshness.
Their idea was developed in response to current conditions in the field, where meat packaging still commonly relies on styrofoam and plastic wrap, which are non-biodegradable and unable to provide direct information about product quality to consumers. This situation highlights the need for a solution that not only helps maintain product quality, but is also more environmentally friendly and informative.
In response to this challenge, they initiated the development of smart packaging capable of detecting beef freshness in real time and integrating it with a digital traceability system. This innovation is designed not only to strengthen food safety, but also to support a more sustainable livestock system through packaging that is smarter, more functional, and more relevant to the needs of today’s food industry.
This achievement reflects the capacity of MFST UGM students to produce research-based innovations that respond to strategic issues in food, livestock, and sustainability. It also highlights the role of the MFST study program in equipping students with competencies that are not only academically strong, but also relevant to industry needs and global challenges.
The achievement of Evelyn Gabriella Suliantoro and Husnul Wati is expected to inspire other MFST students to continue developing impactful research, strengthen collaboration, and create innovative solutions that support the development of more sustainable food and agricultural systems.
